Rethinking Again!

According to a group of middle school kids, “Make It Right” begins with the bathrooms. YA/YA worked with Kids Rethinking New Orleans Schools this summer to launch a campaign for school safety and health. In a graphics workshop led by YA/YA artists, Rethink! kids designed their own “Make it Right” campaign posters. YA/YA artists also built a life-size model of a restroom stall, representing the deplorable conditions of public school restrooms that students have no choice but to use. The 8ft x 12ft restroom model, along with four enlarged versions of the “Make it Right” posters, was exhibited at a Rethink! press conference in July at the Green Project.

Studio Needs: Plans are under way to recruit at least 12 youth to the YA/YA studio guild program this fall. That means we desperately need new studio space. YA/YA’s ideal home is roughly 5,000 square feet, including space for a large open studio, a gallery, an office and storage. If you know of or have space that can be donated or rented at a very reasonable non-profit price, please contact Megg Lamb.

Artist Spotlight

Making it Happen
YA/YA Artist Madania Graves

Although many of YA/YA’s pre-Katrina artists are still living outside the city, some have returned and are making a big difference – like painter Madania Graves. Working as a lead youth artist and mentor, he has conducted Urban Heroes workshops at four schools and several workshops in the YA/YA studio. He was involved the first Orleans Parish “Coming Home Mural” at the CAC, and has played a huge role in the production of the new Jefferson Parish “Coming Home Mural” at Ames Elementary. Madania, formerly a YA/YA youth artist and now a staffer, has proven that YA/YA builds leaders in our community who continue to give back.
